The Usefulness of History

This book, written by a current history teacher, explains why we study history and how it can be ‘useful’ in our lives. The author’s argument that history repeats itself and can thus serve as a guideline for making judgments about current issues was both utterly obvious and presented in a trustworthy manner. For example, by thinking, ‘What would Admiral Yi Sun-sin have done in this crisis?’ or ‘How would General Seo Hui have persuaded the other side before negotiations?’, one can borrow the wisdom of historical figures to make better choices. Furthermore, when comparing Admirals Yi Sun-sin and Won Gyun, the book avoids simplistic judgments—one as a hero, the other as a coward who endangered the navy. Instead, it encourages a multidimensional perspective: Yi Sun-sin, who stood firm against the incompetent court’s armchair theories, and Won Gyun, who fulfilled his duty as a soldier by following orders. This broader historical view was truly enlightening.

As a historian, I also deeply resonated with the explanation of why conservative elders, often referred to as the ‘Taegeukgi Brigade,’ gather at Gwanghwamun. Viewing modern history from their perspective, I came to understand that their actions are entirely understandable. Studying history has enabled me to embrace other generations living in the same era, and it also sparked curiosity about how future generations will interpret current events within their own historical context. The sections covering modern history, such as the Donghak Peasant Movement and the independence movement during the Japanese colonial period, were also fascinating. They highlighted our people’s will for self-determination and independence, their indomitable fighting spirit, and especially the civic consciousness that unites to overcome crises. I learned about hidden leaders who spearheaded the independence movement, like Park Sang-jin and Lee Hoe-yeong, and was reminded that the drama 『Mr. Sunshine』 was precisely the story of such forgotten heroes.

Ultimately, through historical figures encountered in records, I, living in the present, can make wiser decisions by mirroring their wisdom and prudent choices. I resolved to inherit their spirit of the times and noble values as a legacy, striving to build a more progressive and enterprising future. At this moment, as the massive whirlwind of the post-COVID era passes and everything begins anew, The Usefulness of History served as a guiding beacon, steadying the course of my life. Rising at 3 a.m. today to finish this piece, I energetically begin Monday morning’s early delivery!

너무 와닿는 내용인 것 같아요. 역사를 안다는 건 그게 한 개인이든 회사든 조직이든 국가이든 매우 중요한 것 같습니다. 컨텍스트가 오니까요.
