Alongside Park Chan-ho of the MLB and Park Ji-sung of the Premier League, Park Se-ri is a source of pride for South Korea and a pioneer who rewrote sports history. Even after retiring, Park Se-ri has remained active as a golf commentator, Olympic golf team coach, and guest on TV variety shows, gaining even more public attention for her personal life beyond her athletic career. Some details about her wealth were also revealed, earning her the nickname “Rich Sister.” As one of the world’s top athletes, her cumulative prize money and advertising sponsorship deals were staggering. 그녀의 자서전 같은 책을 읽으면서 그녀의 궁금했던 선수 생활의 과정, 가족 이야기, 그리고 선수 이후의 제2의 인생 이야기를 알게 되면서 이런 분이 대한민국의 국력을 높이는 분이구나 라고 생각이 들었습니다. 한 분야에서 최고가 되기 위해 흘렸던 땀과 노력 뿐 아니라 그 정상의 위치를 지키기 위한 노력이 더욱 대단해 보였습니다. 또한 미국에서 영어 인터뷰 하기 위해서 노력했던 에피소드 중 골프 경기장 락커룸에 들어가기 힘들었던 이야기가 기억에 남는데 영어도 못하는 아시아인에 대한 텃세가 대단했는데 결국 기싸움에서 이기고 하고 싶은 말은 직접 하면서 소통에 성공했다는 것이 인상적이었습니다. 이런 경험은 저 역시 처음 미국에 파견 근무를 나갔을때 느꼈던 부분인데 언어의 장벽이라기 보다는 직접적인 표현을 꺼리는 문화적인 장벽이라고 생각했습니다. 같은 아시아인이지만 중국인들은 직접적인 표현을 하는 반면에 일본인들은 자신의 감정을 숨기는 문화인 것처럼 한국의 눈치 문화가 이질감을 불러올 수 있는데 그걸 극복하는 과정이 남 일 같지 않았습니다.
Reading her autobiography-like book, I learned about her intriguing career as an athlete, her family story, and her second life after retiring from sports. This made me realize that she is someone who has contributed to enhancing South Korea’s national strength. What impressed me most was not only the sweat and effort she poured into becoming the best in her field, but also the relentless effort she put into maintaining her position at the top. One memorable episode was when she struggled to enter the locker room at a golf course during an English interview in the United States. Despite facing significant cultural barriers as an Asian person who didn’t speak English well, she eventually overcame the challenge and successfully communicated her thoughts, which was truly inspiring. This experience resonated with me when I first went on a business trip to the United States. I felt that the barrier was not so much a language barrier as it was a cultural barrier of hesitating to express oneself directly. While Chinese people tend to express themselves directly, Japanese people have a culture of hiding their emotions, and Korea’s “reading between the lines” culture can create a sense of alienation. Overcoming this barrier felt like something I could relate to.
LPGA 한국인 여성 골퍼 최초 우승이라는 엄청난 타이틀과 그에 따른 부와 명예 그리고 세리 와인까지(!) 온갖 화려한 수식어가 있지만 그녀는 은퇴 후에도 새로운 제 2의 인생을 살고 있고 스포츠 학교에 대한 비전까지 가지고 있었습니다. 77년 생인 동갑 내기이지만 인천 택배 기사로 살고 있는 제가 존경할 수밖에 없는 분이었고 정말 본받을 만한 정신력과 투지 그리고 소박한 성품의 소유자라고 생각이 들었습니다. 책에 언급되었지만 연말 하우스 파티에 친한 지인들 30명을 초대한다고 하는데 더욱 성공하여 언젠가는 그 파티 초대 리스트에 들어가고 싶다는 꿈을 꾸게 하는 기분 좋은 책이었습니다. 계속 박세리 선수를 응원하겠습니다. 대한민국 파이팅!
Despite the incredible title of being the first Korean woman to win the LPGA, along with the wealth, fame, and even the Serri Wine (!), she continues to live a fulfilling second life after retirement and even has a vision for a sports school. Born in 1977, the same year as me, she is someone I cannot help but admire, living as a delivery driver in Incheon. I believe she possesses an admirable spirit, determination, and a humble nature. As mentioned in the book, she plans to invite 30 close friends to a year-end house party, and reading about it made me dream of one day being on that invitation list. It was a truly inspiring book. I will continue to cheer for Park Se-ri. Go Korea!
