I never dreamed I’d witness war unfolding in real time on the European continent in 2022. An unbelievable, movie-like situation—one that could easily escalate into World War III—is happening right now in Ukraine. We’re hearing news of missile strikes continuing, starting with military facilities and now hitting civilian areas, resulting in hundreds of casualties.
Footage of a young girl killed by bombing while riding her bicycle shows the horrific scene unfiltered, evoking both fear and anger. Images of convoys fleeing to Poland and citizens armed with guns vowing to fight back overlap, making me wonder if I could evacuate my family and then go out to fight myself. Complex thoughts arise: the callous diplomacy of the international community, Putin’s ambitions, and the crisis management capabilities of Ukraine’s comedian-turned-president and his inexperienced advisors. Above all, imagining the utter helplessness of Ukrainian citizens forced to flee their homes leaves me feeling powerless, knowing only prayer can be offered for them.
Meanwhile, a YouTube video criticizing US President Biden’s incompetence in this situation and the Americans who elected him was both uncomfortable and intriguing. It argued that Biden bears responsibility for standing idly by while the conflict escalated amid diplomatic friction between Russia and Ukraine. This is clearly different from the Trump era. The fact that 85% of Putin and Russia’s wealthy elite’s assets are held overseas, yet the US fails to impose strong sanctions, raises serious doubts. I earnestly pray with all my heart that this war, where the majority sacrifices for the benefit of a minority, will stop immediately.
