전 동료이자 지금은 사업을 함께하는 협력파트너 회사 대표님의 소개로 샘물중고등학교의 창업 동아리에서 진로 특강을 하고 왔습니다. 사실 전에도 경기창조경제혁신센터 글로벌 사업 팀장의 자격으로 많은 대학생들에게 창업특강을 한 적은 있었으나 사업 실패 후 가장 부끄럽고 인정하기 힘든 것 중에 하나는 바로 많은 사람들에게 창업전도사로서 창업을 격려했던 사람이 정작 자신은 실패했다는 것이었습니다. 그런 면에서 이번 고등학교에서의 특강은 저에게는 특별한 시간이었습니다.
I gave a career lecture to the entrepreneurship club of Sammul Middle and High School at the introduction of a former colleague and now business partner company representative. In fact, I had previously given a lecture on entrepreneurship to many university students as the head of the global business team at the Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy and Innovation, but one of the most embarrassing and difficult things to admit after a business failure is that the person who encouraged many people to start a business as a startup evangelist actually failed himself. In that sense, this lecture at the high school was a special time for me.
특강 주제는 남들이 잘 가지 않는 좁은 길을 따라왔던 제 인생의 선택들과 그 결과의 이야기였습니다. 기승전결의 흐름을 거쳐 결국에는 성공했다는 이야기로 마무리 되어야 하는데 실패했다면 그 전에 걸어왔던 좁은 길은 아무런 의미없는 것이 되어 버릴 것 같았습니다. 또한 제가 직접 창업을 해 본 경험도 없으면서 창업을 이야기한다는 것도 좀 어불성설이라는 생각도 들어서 처음에는 부탁을 받고 고사했으나 대표님의 거듭된 요청과 꼭 창업자가 아니더라도 학생들에게 다양한 진로의 길을 소개하는 취지로 학생들을 만나달라고 설명을 듣고 용기를 내었습니다.
The topic of the lecture was the story of my life choices and the consequences of following the path less traveled. I felt that it should end with a story of success after going through a series of ups and downs, and if I failed, the path I had taken would be meaningless. I also felt that it was a bit absurd to talk about starting a business when I had no experience in starting a business myself, so I initially declined the request, but after repeated requests from the CEO and an explanation that the purpose of meeting with the students was to introduce them to various career paths, even if they weren’t necessarily founders, I gathered courage.
시간 관계상 자세히 나눌 수 없었지만 학생들에게 저의 대학 재학 중 시작했던 영국 모바일 게임 회사의 1인 지사 이야기, 글로벌 대기업인 IBM 입사와 중소기업인 컴투스로 이직하게 된 과정에서 만난 인생의 멘토, 강영우 박사님 이야기 그리고 미국지사 파견 후 미국경제 위기로 인한 지사 철수의 위기, 회사의 갑작스런 피인수 합병 후 뜻밖의 팔레스타인 방문과 스타트업 세계로의 입문, 한국 귀국 후 창조경제라는 허상 가운데 고군분투 했던 이야기, 그리고 스타트업 퇴사 후 택배기사가 되어 코로나 시대를 거치면서 다시 글로벌 테크회사의 한국지사장으로 재기한 이야기를 하면서 아이들의 반응을 살펴보니 매우 흥미로워 했지만 저를 초대해주신 대표님이 가장 흥미롭게 듣고 계셨습니다.
I was unable to share in detail due to time constraints, but I told the students about my story of starting a one-man branch of a British mobile game company while I was still in college, my life mentor, Dr. Youngwoo Kang, who I met while joining IBM, a global conglomerate, and moving to Comptus, a small and medium-sized company, the crisis of withdrawing the branch due to the U.S. economic crisis after being sent to the U.S., my unexpected visit to Palestine after the company’s sudden acquisition, and my entry into the startup world, After returning to Korea, I struggled with the illusion of the creative economy, and after leaving the startup, I became a delivery driver and reemerged as the head of the Korean branch of a global tech company through the covid era. The children were very interested, but the CEO who invited me was the most interested.
다시는 공적인 자리에서 과거 저의 좁은 길에 대한 이야기를 할 기회가 없을 줄 알았는데 좀 작지만 의미있는 곳에서 저희 이야기를 나눌 수 있게 되어서 저에게는 큰 위로가 되었고 회복의 시간이 되었습니다. 마치 예수님이 자신이 종교재판에 넘겨지기 위해 잡혀가던 날 밤 예수님을 따라갔던 베드로를 주변 사람들이 알아보고 그를 따르던 자라고 추궁하자 세 번이나 자신은 예수를 모른다고 했던 베드로가 떠올랐는데, 나중에 부활하신 예수님이 갈릴리 호수가에서 그를 만났을 때 묵묵히 말없이 물고기를 구워주며 나를 사랑하느냐라고 세 번 질문을 하시면서 그를 회복시킨 것처럼 저에게도 같은 질문을 하시는 것 같은 시간이었습니다. 좁은 길을 걸어왔던 제 짧은 인생 이야기는 고난의 길을 통과하면서 더욱 내면은 단단해지고 다양한 경험을 바탕으로 제가 앞으로 가야할 길을 더욱 명확하게 보여주는 것 같았습니다.
I didn’t think I would ever have the opportunity to talk about my past path in public again, but to be able to share our story in a small but meaningful place was very comforting and restorative for me. It reminded me of Peter, who said three times that he didn’t know Jesus when the people around him recognized him and accused him of being one of Jesus’ followers on the night he was taken away to be handed over to the Inquisition, and later, when the resurrected Jesus met him at the Lake of Galilee, he silently and wordlessly grilled a fish and asked him three times, “Do you love me?” which restored him, just as the resurrected Jesus asked me the same question. My short life story of walking the narrow path seemed to show me more clearly the path I should take in the future, hardened inwardly by the hardships I’ve passed through and enriched by my various experiences.
