작가가 자신의 손자에게 남기는 편지의 형식을 빌어 쓴 책이었는데 학창 시절 해외 주재원으로 근무하셨던 아버지의 안부 편지를 떠올리게 했습니다. 만일 나의 할아버지가 아버지에게 자신의 경험과 성공과 실패 그리고 많은 삶의 지혜를 전수해 주셨던라면 아버지의 삶이 조금은 달라졌을 수도 있고 마찬가지로 나의 아버지도 저에게 자신의 삶의 노하우를 전수해 주셨다면 나의 인생도 지금보다는 더욱 좋은 방향으로 변화되어 있지 않았을까 생각이 드는 그런 책이었습니다. 그러나 그런 훌륭한 삶의 지혜가 담긴 말을 누구나 비슷하게 자신의 언어로 표현할 수 있긴 하지만 그런 삶을 정말로 직접 산다는 것은 또 다른 차원의 일이라는 것을 새삼 깨닫습니다.
The book was written in the form of a letter from an author to his grandson, which reminded me of the letters my father sent me when he was stationed overseas during my school days. If my grandfather had passed down his experiences, successes, failures, and the wisdom he gained from life to my father, perhaps my father’s life would have been a little different. Similarly, if my father had shared his life’s wisdom with me, perhaps my life would have taken a better direction than it has today. However, while anyone can express such profound life wisdom in their own words, actually living such a life is an entirely different matter, and this book made me realize that once again.
왜 우리는 아침마다 침대를 박차고 일어나야 하는가라는 질문으로 시작하여 일하는 방식의 변화를 설명하는데 코로나 시대를 거쳐 이제는 원격근무가 새로운 일상이 되어 버린 시대에 우리는 어떤 방식으로 일을 해야하는지 설명하고 있습니다. 저도 돌아보면 2000년 초반부터 그 당시 매우 앞서 있었던 모바일 오피스 환경에서 일을 했는데 주로 외근이 많은 영업사원들은 사무실의 지정 좌석이 없이 필요한 시간동안만 개인 노트북으로 로그인한 데스크를 사용했었고 2010년대 미국에서는 블랙베리라는 모바일 기기로 언제 언디서나 이메일을 읽고 쓸 수 있었습니다. 스마트폰 이후의 메타버스 시대에는 새로운 버츄얼 오피스가 새롭게 출시되고 클라우드 기반의 협업 툴로 전세계 많은 임직원들과 실시간으로 함께 소통하며 일할 수 있는 시대가 된 이 시점에도 변하지 않는 일의 원칙들을 설명하고 있었습니다. 한편 보안 이슈로 인해 직원들의 모든 전자 저장장치를 보안 검색대에 맡기거나 휴대폰 카메라에 도촬방지용 스티커를 붙이는 것을 당연하게 받아들이는 기업과 전세계 2000여명의 직원이 사무실이 없이 모두 홈 오피스에서 근무를 하면서도 직원들에 대한 신뢰를 바탕으로 한 기업문화를 떠올리게 했습니다.

In the post-COVID-19 era, where remote work has become the new normal, it discusses how we should approach work in this new reality. Looking back, I started working in a mobile office environment in the early 2000s, which was very advanced at the time. Sales representatives, who were frequently on the go, did not have designated desks in the office and instead used personal laptops to log in to their desks only when needed. In the 2010s, in the United States, people could read and send emails anytime, anywhere using BlackBerry mobile devices. In the metaverse era following the advent of smartphones, new virtual offices have emerged, and cloud-based collaboration tools now enable real-time communication and collaboration with employees worldwide. Even in this era, the book explains the unchanging principles of work. On the other hand, some companies have made it standard practice to require employees to hand over all electronic devices for security screening or to affix anti-surveillance stickers on their phone cameras due to security concerns. Meanwhile, another company with over 2,000 employees worldwide operates entirely from home offices, yet maintains a corporate culture built on trust in its employees.
기독교 집안에서 자라 온 저자는 자신의 신념에 대해서도 스스로 반문해봐야 한다고 조언하며 저에게도 그런 질문을 하게 했습니다. 인간의 근원적이고 본질적인 질문에 대해서도 부모의 가르침이나 자신이 믿고 있는 종교의 교리에 의존하는 것이 아니라 스스로의 힘으로 탐구하고 사유하여 자신만의 버전을 가져야 한다고 이해했습니다. 이것은 다원주의의 시대에 살고 있는 나와 내 가족 그리고 커뮤니티를 지키는 방법이란 생각이 들었는데 폐쇄적인 산상 금식기도원과 개방적인 샌프란시스코의 무지개 깃발 거리 가운데 어떤 기준으로 나의 신념의 축을 두어야 할지 참 어렵기 때문입니다. 몇 년전 미국 최대 장로교회(PCUSA) 의 동성결혼의 찬성을 두고 회원 교회들 간의 의견이 나뉘고 한인교회 사회 내에서도 갈등이 생겼던 과거의 사례를 돌아보게 했습니다.

However, it is truly challenging to determine the criteria by which to anchor my beliefs between the closed-off mountain retreats of fasting prayer and the open-minded streets of San Francisco adorned with rainbow flags. This made me reflect on a past incident where the Presbyterian Church (USA) (PCUSA), the largest Presbyterian church in the United States, split over its decision to approve same-sex marriage, leading to conflicts within the Korean-American church community.
내면의 호기심을 회복하는 법을 조언하는 편지 장에서는 창의력과 상상력을 유지하며 용기까지 더해진다면 창업가가 될 수 있다는 조언을 들으면서 창업가의 첫번째 단계가 바로 저자의 아내가 새로운 식사 메뉴를 만들어 보는 것 같은 작은 호기심이라는 것을 다시 한번 확인했습니다. 기계 부품이 되지 않는 일을 해야한다는 것이나 진정한 친구는 내가 대머리라는 진실을 직언할 수 있는 사람이라는 것, 결혼은 세번 계약서를 갱신해야 한다는 것, 필요와 돈을 구별하는 것, 숫자에 현혹되지 않는 법의 장을 읽으면서 느낀 것은 인생의 여러 면에서 밸런스를 맞추는 것이 참 어려운 일이고 나 자신부터 작은 것부터 변화시키기 위해 노력해야겠다는 것입니다. 찰스 핸디 저자를 통해 역시 나이는 숫자에 불과하다는 것을 새삼 깨달으며서 과거 산호세의 어느 산에서 산악 마라톤을 완주하고 내려와 맥주를 들이키시면서 오늘이 자신의 60번째 생일이라고 하시면서 자축하던 멋진 노신사분을 떠오르게 하는 책이었습니다. 그래서 저는 오늘도 새벽 4시 반에 일어나 삶이 던지는 같은 질문에 저만의 답을 하려고 노력합니다.
In the section advising on how to regain inner curiosity, I heard the advice that if you maintain creativity and imagination and add courage, you can become an entrepreneur. This made me realize once again that the first step toward becoming an entrepreneur is something as small as the author’s wife trying out a new recipe. Reading about the importance of doing work that doesn’t make you a machine part, the true meaning of friendship, the need to renew marriage contracts three times, distinguishing between needs and wants, and not being swayed by numbers, I realized how challenging it is to maintain balance in various aspects of life and how I must strive to make small changes in myself first. Through Charles Handy, I was once again reminded that age is just a number. The book made me think of a gentleman I met years ago in San Jose, who completed a mountain marathon, came down the mountain, and celebrated his 60th birthday by drinking beer, saying it was a great day. So, even today, I wake up at 4:30 AM to try to find my own answers to the same questions life keeps asking me.
