여느 때처럼 주일 아침에도 새벽 4시 반에 잠이 깨어 어제 깜박하고 안 뺀 컨택 렌즈를 빼고 휴대폰으로 유튜브를 켜보니 뉴스 속보로 서울 이태원에서 발생한 끔찍한 압사 사건에 대한 소식이 가득했습니다. 너무도 자극적이고 충격적인 헤드라인들이 눈을 의심케 했는데 140여명 이상 압사로 사망했고 100명 이상 부상이라는 소식이 믿겨지지 않아 다른 기사들과 트위터 소식으로 현장에서 찍은 영상을 확인하고 대참사의 현장을 확인할 수 있었습니다. 소방 당국의 3차 브리핑에서 침착하게 사망자 및 부상자의 수를 보고하는 소방대장의 마이크를 잡은 손이 떨리고 있는 모습을 보며 현장의 참혹함과 대혼란을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 그리고 정제되지 않은 유투버들의 영상들을 몇 개 봤는데 골목에서 압사 직전에 숨이 막혀 하나 둘씩 비명을 지르다가 쓰러지는 상황에서도 쿵쾅거리면서 흘러나오는 클럽 음악 소리는 지옥의 한가운데서 광란 파티의 모습 같았습니다.
As usual on a Sunday morning, I woke up at 4:30 a.m., removed my contact lenses that I hadn’t taken out yesterday, and turned on YouTube on my phone to find the breaking news coverage of the horrific stampede in Itaewon, Seoul. The sensationalized and shocking headlines made me doubt my eyes, and I couldn’t believe the news that more than 140 people had died in the stampede and more than 100 were injured, so I turned to other articles and Twitter updates to see the footage from the scene and get a sense of the carnage. I could feel the devastation and chaos of the scene as I watched the fire chief’s hand trembling on the microphone as he calmly reported the number of dead and injured during the fire authorities’ third briefing, and I watched some of the unedited YouTubers’ videos, and even as the people in the alleyway screamed and collapsed one by one, choking on their own breath before being crushed to death, the thumping club music sounded like a rave party in the middle of hell.
언제부터인가 클럽과 술파티의 성지가 되어 버린 이태원은 과거 용산 미국 부대의 영향으로 유흥과 향락의 온상지가 되었고 한 때는 짝퉁 패션 아이템들을 파는 곳으로도 유명했습니다. 그러나 이태원은 이국적인 레스토랑과 부티크 샵이 많은 것으로도 유명하고 인천 송도에 사는 외국인 친구도 헤어샵에 가기 위해서 이태원까지 갈 정도로 많은 외국인들이 방문하는 곳이기도 합니다. 오래 전에 인도네시아 음식을 먹고 싶어서 이태원에서 가족들과 식사를 한 기억이 있고 카투사 시절에는 미군 친구들과 자주 방문했던 곳이고 사회 생활 할 때는 커스텀 양복을 맞춰 입던 양장점이 있는 곳이었으며 불과 몇 개월 전에도 고객사분들과 함께 루프탑 바에서 맥주를 마셨던 곳이라 저에게도 너무 충격적인 뉴스였습니다.
Itaewon, which has become a mecca for clubs and drinking parties, has become a hotbed of nightlife and entertainment due to the influence of the American troops in Yongsan, and was once famous for selling counterfeit fashion items. However, Itaewon is also known for its many exotic restaurants and boutique shops, and is visited by many foreigners, such as my foreign friend who lives in Songdo, Incheon, who travels to Itaewon to get her hair done. I remember eating with my family in Itaewon many years ago because I wanted to try Indonesian food, it was a place I frequented with my American military friends during my time in Katusa, it was home to a tailor shop where I used to get my custom suits tailored during my social life, and just a few months ago, I had a beer on a rooftop bar with some of my clients, so this news was very shocking to me.
좁은 골목에 많은 클럽과 바들이 모여 있는 구조나 불법적으로 매장을 확장 했다거나 실외 간판들로 인해 길이 더욱 좁혀 있을 수도 있겠다는 의심, 그리고 땅이 약간 경사가 져 있는 자연적인 조건 등, 많은 참사의 원인이 있겠지만, 정제되지 않은 트위터 글 중 건장한 남자들이 사람들을 밀었다는 주장이 맘에 걸렸습니다. 그리고 몇 주후 일베에 민주노총 조합원의 양심고백 글이 올라왔는데 그 내용은 용산에서 집회를 마친 후 민주노총 수만명이 이태원으로 이동했고 간부의 지시에 따라 사람들이 골목에서 나오지 못하게 사방에서 밀었다는 충격적인 내용이었습니다. 만일 이 내용이 사실이라면 이태원 참사는 단순한 사고가 아닌 누군가가 기획한 테러일 수도 있다는 생각이 들었습니다.
While there are many possible causes for the tragedy, such as the clustering of many clubs and bars in a narrow alley, suspicions that illegally expanded stores and outdoor signage may have further narrowed the street, and the natural condition of the slightly sloping ground, I was disturbed by the claim in an unedited Twitter post that strong men pushed people. Then, a few weeks later, there was a shocking confession of conscience by a member of the Democratic Trade Union Confederation on Yilbeh, which said that after the rally in Yongsan, tens of thousands of Democratic Trade Unionists moved to Itaewon and pushed people from all sides to prevent them from leaving the alleyway under the direction of the cadres.
저는 이태원 대참사 후에 용산구청장, 서울시장, 행안부 장관, 국무총리와 대통령직을 맡고 있는 분들의 진심이 느껴지지 않는 대국민 발표를 보면서 실망했습니다. 이태원 참사 관련 보도 영상 중 그 골목에서 한 상인 분이 제사 음식을 준비하여 불쌍하게 죽은 어린 학생들의 넋을 위로하려고 했다가 경찰들의 제지를 당하다가 결국 우는 모습을 보면서 저도 함께 울었습니다. 아직도 바로 전날 엘레베이터에서 어느 청년 둘이 나누던 이야기가 귀에 맴도는데, 그 중 한 명이 토요일 밤에 할로윈 파티에 참석하기 위해서 이태원에 놀러갈까 하고 물어보는 대화였습니다. 과거에는 미국 문화를 즐기던 소수에 의해 주최된 할로윈 파티가 규모가 커져서 서울 도심에서 몇만명 이상이 모이는 ‘지역 축제’가 되었다는 것도 안타깝고 그 결과 세월호 사고 이후로 가장 큰 규모의 사상자를 내게 된 이태원 압사 사고는 대한민국 청년들의 출구 없는 삶의 현실을 반영하는 것 같아 가슴이 먹먹했습니다.
After the Itaewon tragedy, I was disappointed to see the insincere public statements made by the mayor of Yongsan-gu, the mayor of Seoul, the minister of interior and safety, the prime minister, and the president of South Korea. I cried when I watched a video of a vendor in that alley who tried to comfort the souls of the young students who died by preparing sacrificial food, only to be stopped by police. I can still hear the conversation I had with two young men in the elevator the day before, in which one of them asked me if I wanted to go to Itaewon on Saturday night to attend a Halloween party. It’s sad that Halloween parties, which used to be organized by a small group of people who enjoyed American culture, have grown in size and become a “local festival” that attracts tens of thousands of people in the center of Seoul, and it’s heartbreaking that the Itaewon stampede, which resulted in the largest number of casualties since the Sewol ferry disaster, reflects the reality of life without an exit for young people in South Korea.
