오래전에 컴퓨터가 인간을 체스에서 이겼던 역사적인 사건 이후로 오랜 시간이 지나서 2016년에는 컴퓨터가 인간을 바둑에서 이긴 일이 있었습니다. 전세계 바둑 챔피언이었던 이세돌 9단과 딥마인드 (Deep Mind)사의 알파고(AlphaGo)라는 인공지능 프로그램 간의 대결이었는데 전세계에 중계되어 큰 관심을 받았습니다. ‘비전공자도 이해할 수 있는 AI 지식’이라는 책을 통해 알게 된 것은 이세돌 9단은 인간으로서 컴퓨터에게 이긴 마지막 인물이라는 점과 AI는 스스로 학습하는 능력이 있어서 이제는 바둑 실력이 그 당시 이세돌 9단보다 훨씬 뛰어나다는 것입니다. 실제로 그 이후 알파고는 커제 9단과 대전하여 3연승을 거두면서 대중에게 AI 존재감을 각인시킵니다.

The match was between Lee Sedol IX, the world champion Go player, and an artificial intelligence program called AlphaGo from Deep Mind, and it was televised around the world. What we learned from the book AI Knowledge for Non-Geeks is that Lee Sedol IX was the last human to beat a computer, and that AI has the ability to learn on its own, so its Go skills are now far superior to Lee Sedol IX’s at that time. In fact, since then, AlphaGo has won three straight games against Lee Sedol IX, putting AI in the public eye.
그리고 챗GPT의 등장으로 이제는 자연어 처리가 거의 완벽하게 되는 AI와 다양한 주제를 가지고 대화할 수 있게 되었습니다. 그동안 AI의 암흑기를 거쳐 이제는 AI가 다시 각광받는 시대가 된 후 아마도 가장 먼저 사라질 인간의 업무 중 하나가 창작이라는 말을 듣고 좀 놀랐는데 창작은 오로지 인간만이 할 수 있는 영역이라고 믿어왔기 때문입니다. 실례로 OpenAI사의 DALL-e라는 프로그램으로 구체적인 쿼리로 이미지 제작을 요청하면 매우 창의적인 이미지를 생성해 줍니다. 회의록 작성이나 PPT 발표자료 자동 제작 등 앞으로 AI가 적용될 수 있는 분야는 무궁무진하다는 생각이 들었습니다.

I was surprised to hear that one of the first human tasks to disappear after the dark ages of AI and the reemergence of AI is creativity, because I have always believed that creativity is something that only humans can do. For example, OpenAI’s DALL-e program generates very creative images when you ask it to create images with specific queries. I realized that there are a lot of areas where AI can be applied in the future, such as taking meeting minutes or automatically creating PPT presentations.
한편 구글에서 딥러닝(Deep Learning)를 연구하던 제프리 힌튼이라는 펠로우가 자신이 AI를 연구했던 것을 후회한다고 하며 회사를 떠나야 AI의 위험에 대해 자유롭게 말할 수 있을 것 같다며 퇴사의 이유를 밝혀다고 전해졌습니다. 정말로 그런 이유로 회사를 떠난 것인지 아니면 반대로 AI 분야에서 창업을 하기 위해서 떠난 것인지는 두고 보면 알겠지만 분명히 대기업에서 AI 기술을 이용하여 하려는 사업 방향과는 다른 길을 걷겠다는 취지로 이해가 됩니다. 또한 터미네이터의 스카이넷이 정말 현실화될 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들며 국방 목적으로 연구 개발되는 기술은 인류를 오히려 위협하는 방향으로 진화될 수 있겠다고 걱정이 되었습니다. 최근에 무인 드론이 러시아 푸틴 대통령이 있는 크렘린 궁 위에서 격추되는 일을 보면서 이미 현재 기술로도 충분히 가능한 시나리오라고 생각이 들었습니다.
Meanwhile, a fellow named Jeffrey Hinton, who was working on deep learning at Google, has reportedly revealed his reasons for leaving, saying that he regretted working on AI and felt that leaving the company would allow him to speak freely about the dangers of AI. It remains to be seen whether he really left for that reason or to start his own business in the AI field, but it certainly makes sense that he wanted to take a different path from what large companies are trying to do with AI technology. I also worry that the Terminator’s Skynet could become a reality, and that technology that is researched and developed for defense purposes could evolve into a threat to humanity. Recently, when I watched an unmanned drone being shot down over the Kremlin palace of Russian President Putin, I realized that this scenario is already possible with current technology.
체스보다도 훨씬 복잡한 바둑 기보 데이터를 분석하여 인간을 능가하고 인간처럼 대화하면서 인간보다 더욱 창조적인 컨텐츠를 제작해 내며 반인류적인 무기로 진화할 수 있는 AI 프로그램이 이 시간에도 엄청난 속도로 연구 개발되는 시대에 과연 인간은 도대체 무엇을 할 수 있는가라는 의문이 들었습니다. 그러나 챗GPT를 잘 활용하기 위해서는 쿼리(Query)가 중요한데 좋은 질문을 할 수 있는 프로그램 능력과 자율 주행차가 동시에 사고의 위험에 빠진 노인과 어린아이 중 누구에게 유리한 결정을 하도록 도덕적인 기준을 만드는 역할은 결국 인간이 할 수 밖에 없다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그리고 영적인 능력을 가진 인간만이 할 수 있는 사람들에게 감동을 주는 일들은 어느 시대에서나 필요했다고 생각이 들어서 오늘도 블로그에 기록을 남기며 제가 만나는 주변 사람들을 잘 섬겨야겠다고 다짐했습니다.

However, I realized that query is the key to making good use of ChatGPT, and that humans are the ones who have the ability to ask good questions and create the moral standards for self-driving cars to make decisions in favor of an elderly person or a child who is in danger of being hit by an autonomous vehicle. I also realized that there is a need in every era for people to be touched by things that only humans with spiritual abilities can do, so I vowed to serve the people around me well by writing about it in my blog today.
