In 2014, after wrapping up life in the US with my family and returning to Korea, my first blog post became the start of a small miracle. It chronicled the intense journey of establishing a US branch for a Korean mobile game company and entering the App Store during the paradigm shift from feature phones to smartphones. The experience of targeting niche markets, forming partnerships with global platform companies, and building networks sparked a larger-than-expected response. This led to IT podcast interviews and special lectures for the Startup Alliance, ultimately granting me the precious opportunity to plan a startup acceleration program at the Gyeonggi Creative Economy Innovation Center and engage with numerous key players in Korea’s startup ecosystem.
Initially, sharing my modest experiences felt daunting. Yet witnessing how my story encouraged and emboldened struggling founders brought deep fulfillment. From aspiring college students to seasoned veterans, I learned to navigate rigid public institution regulations and communicate in the language of the field to support them. At times, I witnessed the ‘different dreams’ of those dreaming of technological innovation in the blockchain industry and speculators chasing quick riches. Watching them cheer wildly when value rose, only to crumble before greed, I painfully realized the futility brought by human intellectual arrogance and greed.
After my business failed and I became a delivery driver, I encountered a world entirely different from before. From the Hanjin Express center manager and agency owner who trusted me at the terminal I visited without hesitation, to the repair shop owner who encouraged me upon hearing English during an online meeting, to the Sobling owner who provided delicious espresso daily… These individuals were true neighbors who gave me the courage to reconnect with the world. I earnestly hope my story of failure, recovery, and overcoming depression becomes a small ray of hope for office workers and job seekers suffering alone even now.
After experiencing complete recovery, I decided to pass on the miraculous grace I received. Using the generous donation from a senior Silicon Valley engineer as seed money, I launched the ‘Donation Project to Spread Kindness’. By pooling profits from my side dish business and donations, I sponsored over 600 boxes of side dishes for the Songdo 1-dong Sharing Fridge, conveying warm hearts to single-person households and elderly living alone. Now, my side dish business and delivery service have become precious means to continue giving.
At the wedding feast in Cana described in the Bible, when the wine ran out, there were servants who obeyed Jesus’ words and filled the jars with water. The guests marveled at the taste of the wine that came later, but only the ‘servants who drew the water’ knew how that water had turned into wine. Having witnessed countless miracles in my own life, I too wanted to share my story with the same heart as those servants.
My writing skills still fall short of perfectly capturing the sunrise each dawn or the sunset over Incheon’s Hangdong. Yet, to share even a taste of that miraculous wine, the life of an Incheon delivery driver delivering happiness continues today.
“The servants who had drawn the water knew” (John 2:9)
