글을 쓰기 시작한 후 가장 많이 바뀐 것은 저의 언어 습관입니다. 특히 나의 생각을 스스로 정리하고 요약하여 상대방에게 전달하는 능력이 과거에 비해서 향상된 것을 느낍니다. 이것은 제가 사고하는 방식부터 표현하는 글쓰기까지 모든 것이 바뀌었기 때문일 것입니다. 저의 언어가 바뀌고 대화가 바뀌니 우선 가족과의 관계가 개선되고 가족과의 소통이 더욱 원활해진 것을 느낍니다. 특히 입시를 앞두고 있는 큰 아들과 블로그로 소통하고 둘째 아들과도 블로그 글을 첨삭하며 서로의 생각을 알 수 있어서 너무 행복하고 유익합니다.
What has changed the most since I started writing is my language habits, especially my ability to organize and summarize my thoughts and convey them to others has improved compared to the past. This is probably because everything has changed, from the way I think to the way I write to the way I express myself. Since my language has changed and the conversation has changed, I feel that my relationship with my family has improved and communication with them has become smoother. I am especially happy and beneficial to be able to communicate with my eldest son, who is preparing for the entrance exam, through the blog, and to be able to comment on blog posts with my second son, so that we can know each other’s thoughts.
한편 대한민국의 입시제도 앞에서 자유로울 수 없는 저희 아이들도 학원을 다니면서 내신 공부와 수능 공부를 하고 있습니다. 그러나 저는 입시제도의 틀을 벗어나고 싶다면 글을 쓰면 된다고 생각합니다. 그런 저의 믿음을 이 책은 뒷받침해 주었고 전세계 최고의 대학인 하버드 대학에서도 4년동안 글을 쓰는 훈련을 한다는 사실이 놀라웠습니다. 매우 구체적으로 글의 소재를 찾는 방법부터 레고 블럭을 조립하듯이 글의 구조를 맞추는 법, 1500자 내로 요약해서 써야만 가장 효율적으로 읽을 수 있다는 내용이 매우 흥미로웠습니다. 톨스토이도 자신의 글을 모두 쓰레기라고 표현하면서 계속 업데이트하지 않으면 안된다는 그의 말을 통해 글은 계속해서 완성해 나가는 과정이라는 것을 깨달았습니다. 실제로 그는 노인과 바다 소설을 200번 이상 고쳤다고 합니다. 저도 완벽한 글쓰기가 아닌 계속 고쳐쓰는 글쓰기를 하도록 오늘도 새벽 4시반에 일어나 하루를 힘차게 시작했습니다.

This book supported my belief, and I was surprised to learn that Harvard University, one of the best universities in the world, trains students to write for four years. It was fascinating to learn how to be very specific about what you want to write about, how to structure your writing like building Lego blocks, and how to summarize in 1500 characters for the most efficient reading. Tolstoy’s quote about how he described all of his writing as rubbish and that he had to keep updating it made me realize that writing is a process of constant refinement – in fact, he is said to have revised The Old Man and the Sea more than 200 times. It inspired me to get up at 4:30am today and start my day with the same intention – not to write perfect, but to keep revising.
