탈북인들의 탈출 여정을 주제로 쓴 이지성 작가의 책 1만 킬로미터를 읽으면서 지금까지 제가 가지고 있었던 가치관에 지각 변동이 생겼고 마치 영화 매트릭스처럼 거대한 가상의 세계에서 빨간 약을 먹고 깨어난 것 같았습니다. 지금까지 진실로 알고 있던 것이 어쩌면 진실이 아닐 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들으면서 정말 전 국민이 속고 있었던 것이 아닌가 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 이 책은 슈퍼맨 목사님이라고 부르는 선교사님을 따라 중국 단동에 간 것이 계기가 되어 약 5년간 북한 탈북민을 동남아 국가의 비밀 루트를 통해 구출하는 생생한 과정을 담은 내용이었습니다.
Reading Lee Ji-sung’s book 10,000 Km, about the escape journey of North Korean defectors, caused a tectonic shift in the values I had held until now, and it was as if I had taken a red pill and woken up in a huge fictional world, like the movie Matrix. I wondered if the whole country had been deceived, as I realized that what I had known as the truth until now might not be the truth after all. The book was about following a missionary who called himself Pastor Superman to Dandong, China, and rescuing North Korean defectors through secret routes in the Southeast Asian country for about five years.
또한 탈북민 중 기독교 신앙을 갖게 된 몇 몇 사람들은 다시 목숨을 걸고 북한으로 들어가서 기독교 복음을 전하다가 순교를 했다는 충격적인 이야기는 어떤 매체에서도 들어온 본 적이 없었습니다. 탈북민들의 탈출 과정의 거리가 총 1만 킬로미터라서 책제목을 그렇게 지은 것인데 마치 특수 작전을 방불케하는 국제적인 구출 작전이었습니다. 슈퍼맨 목사님은 목숨을 걸고 이런 위험한 일을 하고 계셨는데 이 분을 통해 구출된 탈북민이 4,000명이 넘는다는 내용도 놀라웠습니다. 인신매매로 팔려온 여성 탈북민의 몸값을 놓고 협상을 하다가 인신매매 조직으로부터 칼에 찔리고 총에 맞은 이야기는 범죄 영화를 보는 것 같았고 목사님이 과거에는 한국의 주사파였다는 고백도 충격적이었습니다.
Also, the shocking story that some of the North Koreans who came to the Christian faith risked their lives to go back into North Korea and were martyred for sharing the Christian gospel was something I had never heard before in any media. I titled the book that way because the total distance of the escape was 10,000 kilometers, and it was an international rescue operation that was almost like a special operation. Pastor Superman was doing this dangerous work at the risk of his life, and it was amazing to read that more than 4,000 North Koreans were rescued through him. The story of how he was stabbed and shot by a human trafficking organization while negotiating the ransom of a female North Korean defector who had been sold into human trafficking was like watching a crime movie, and the confession that Pastor Superman used to be an injector in South Korea was also shocking.
과거에는 교육의 혁신과 AI 시대에 대비할 수 있는 인문학적 능력을 갖춰야 한다는 내용의 베스트셀러를 쓰던 작가가 언제부터인가 극우 꼴통이라는 오명을 쓰고 북한 탈북민을 구출하는 현장에 목숨을 내놓은 이유가 무엇인지 궁금해졌습니다. 그래서 작가의 다른 책을 더 읽고 유튜브 채널을 구독하여 과거 방송들과 최근 라이브 방송에 참여하면서 이지성 작가에 대해서 좀 더 알게 되었습니다. 무엇이 진실이고 무엇이 거짓인지 알기 어려운 정보의 홍수 시대에 분별력이 매우 중요한데, 이 책을 통해서 한 쪽에 편향되어 있는 언론의 뉴스나 정치인들의 말을 걸러 들을 수 있는 안목이 조금 생긴 것 같았습니다.
I was curious to know why an author who used to write best-selling books about the need to transform education and equip students with liberal arts skills to prepare them for the age of AI would suddenly be labeled a far-right nutcase and put his life on the line to rescue North Korean refugees. I read more of his books and subscribed to his YouTube channel to get to know him better by watching his past and recent live broadcasts. Discernment is so important in an age of information overload where it’s hard to know what’s true and what’s not, and I felt like this book gave me a little more discernment to filter out the news and politicians who are biased toward one side or the other.
저는 과거 대학 시절 때부터 북한 귀순자였던 동기생 형님을 통해서 비교적 일찍 북한의 실상과 그 현실에 대해서 관심을 갖게 되었습니다. 그리고 사회 각계 각층의 탈북 정착민을 만나면서 북한 사회를 간접적으로 이해할 수 있었고 역대 정부의 대북지원 정책과 인도적 지원에 대해 긍정적이었습니다. 미국 주재원 시기에는 북한 선교사님들을 통해 미주 한인 커뮤니티에서 많은 재정을 지원하고 북한 방문을 하고 있다는 것을 알게 되면서 이런 노력이 합쳐져 언젠가는 통일 시대가 올 것이라는 소망을 갖고 있었습니다. 결국 함께 신앙생활 하던 한인 교포가 헌신하여 북한 장애 어린이 선교 사역을 시작하셔서 저도 소액으로 후원하고 북한에 방문하시는 분들의 지원 물품들을 모아 전달하는 일을 도와 드리면서 간접적으로 선교 사역에 동참하였습니다.
I became interested in North Korea and its reality relatively early on through my older brother, who was a North Korean returnee from my college days, and through meeting North Korean defectors from all walks of life, I was able to understand North Korean society indirectly and was positive about the policies and humanitarian aid provided by successive governments. During my time as an expatriate in the U.S., I learned that the Korean-American community in the U.S. was providing a lot of financial support and visits to North Korea through North Korean missionaries, and I had the hope that these efforts would combine to bring about reunification one day. Eventually, a Korean-American with whom I shared faith started a missionary work for children with disabilities in North Korea, and I indirectly participated in the missionary work by making small donations and helping to collect and deliver support items for those who visited North Korea.
그런데 이 책을 통해서 북한 선교사를 사칭하는 사기꾼들이 한인 교포들의 애국심과 동정심을 악용하여 헌금을 악용하는 일이 많다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 그리고 북한 당국에서는 이런 사기꾼들을 통해 외화벌이를 하고 있고 사실상 지하 교회는 존재하지 않는다는 것도 슬프지만 현실이었습니다. 물론 탈북 정착민들의 남겨진 가족들에게 생활비를 송금하거나 심지어는 돈으로 매수하여 가족을 탈출시키는 일도 있긴 하지만 공식 기관이나 단체로 지원 활동을 하는 것은 사실상 불가능하다는 것을 깨달으며 낙심하였습니다. 제가 후원하는 선교사님도 이런 현실을 이미 아시고 의약품이나 어린이 물품으로 북한 어린이 시설을 지원하고 계셨지만 그조차도 전시용이었고 길거리에서 굶어죽는 꽃제비들이 더 많은 것이 현실이었습니다. 게다가 북한 해커들의 암호화폐 탈취와 동남아 마약 조직과의 거래 등의 불법적인 행위는 북한을 국가로 인정하기 어렵게 했습니다.
Through the book, I learned that scammers posing as North Korean missionaries often exploit the patriotism and sympathy of Korean Americans to take advantage of donations, and that the North Korean authorities use these scammers to earn foreign currency, and that the underground church does not exist, which is a sad reality. Of course, it is possible to send money to the families left behind by North Korean settlers, or even bribe them to escape, but I was discouraged to realize that it is virtually impossible to provide support through official agencies or organizations. The missionary I sponsor was aware of this reality and had been supporting North Korean children’s facilities with medicine and children’s supplies, but even that was for show and there were many more starving children on the streets. Furthermore, North Korean hackers’ illegal activities, such as cryptocurrency theft and trade with Southeast Asian drug cartels, made it difficult to recognize North Korea as a country.
이 책을 통해 북한을 탈출한 탈북민들의 참혹한 현실을 마주하며 지금까지 북한 선교의 목적으로 후원했던 많은 사람이 혹시 속아왔던 것은 아닌지 의문이 생겼습니다. 김일성 태양교를 숭배하는 평양의 특권층과 그 체제를 위하여 대한민국의 순수한 교인들의 헌금이 악용되고 특히 미주 한인교회를 돌며 거짓 후원을 일삼아 왔던 사기꾼 선교사들이 많다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이런 불편한 진실을 국민들에게 가리고 이런 정권을 국가로 인정해 주려는 국제적인 노력과 정상끼리 만나 가짜 평화의 이벤트를 하는 것이 국민을 기만하는 것일 수도 있다는 들었습니다.
This book exposes the harrowing realities of North Korean defectors who have fled the country and makes me wonder if many of us who have supported North Korean missions have been duped. I learned that the donations of innocent South Koreans have been misappropriated for the benefit of the privileged class in Pyongyang who worship Kim Il Sung’s solar religion and its regime, and that there are many fraudulent missionaries who have been traveling to Korean-American churches, especially in the U.S. I was told that international efforts to recognize the regime as a state and to hold fake peace events where leaders meet with each other may be a way to hide these uncomfortable truths from the people.
결정적으로 인도적 지원 명목으로 제공한 물품들은 중국에서 팔려 김일성 태양교를 숭배하는 평양의 특권층에게 자금줄이 된다는 것도 놀라웠습니다. 그리고 과거 북한에서 자유를 찾아 목숨을 걸고 대한민국으로 망명한 헌법상 국민들을 강제 북송한 후 대한민국으로 탈출하는 사람들이 거의 없어졌다는 북한 주민의 증언도 섬뜻했습니다. 이 책을 통해 북한 선교의 현주소 뿐만 아니라 역대 정부의 북한에 대한 정책 나아가 대한민국의 헌법의 기초를 어디에 두고 있는지 알 수 있었습니다. 저는 올바른 편에 서서 분별하고 깨어있는 통일 시민이 되어야겠다고 다짐하며 오늘도 새벽에 일어나 블로그를 쓰며 힘차게 시작했습니다.
Crucially, the goods provided under the guise of humanitarian aid were sold in China, funneling money to the privileged in Pyongyang who worshiped Kim Il Sung’s solar religion. I was also chilled by the testimonies of North Koreans who told me that after the forced repatriation of constitutional citizens who risked their lives to escape to South Korea in search of freedom in the past, there are very few people escaping to South Korea. Through this book, I was able to understand not only the current state of North Korean missions, but also the policies of successive governments toward North Korea and the foundation of the Korean constitution. I woke up at dawn to write this blog, determined to be on the right side, to be a discerning and vigilant citizen of unification.
