최근 가족 중 자녀의 진학을 놓고 고민하다가 가평에 위치한 국제중고등학교를 고려하고 있다고 해서 찾아보니 통일교 재단의 학교라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 통일교는 대한민국 최대의 이단으로 알려져 있고 문선명 총재가 사망한 후에도 그의 아들 후계자들을 통해서 막강한 종교 권력을 과시하고 있는 종교 단체입니다. 교인의 수도 엄청나고 운영하는 사업의 규모도 대단하다는 것을 알고 있었지만 교육 사업을 하고 있다는 것을 이번 기회를 통해서 알게 되었습니다. 물론 기독교 재단의 학교나 불교 재단의 학교와 비교하여 통일교 재단의 학교를 차별할 이유는 없고 교사와 학생들의 교육에 대한 열정과 열의는 공립 학교에 비해 훌륭할 것이라고 생각합니다. 특히 무너진 공립 학교에 대한 학부모의 신뢰와 학교 폭력이나 그 밖에 교권이 훼손된 뉴스를 들으면서 좋은 학교에 대한 수요는 어느 때보다 높을 것으로 생각됩니다. 그런 면에서 국제 학교는 학부모들에게 좋은 대안을 줄 수 있을지도 모르겠습니다. 또한 가정마다 교육의 목표를 어디에 두는가에 따라 자녀의 진학과 학교를 선택하게 될 것 같은데 그 목표를 상위권 대학 진학 입학에 두는 경우가 많습니다. 일부 가정의 경우 외국 일류 대학 입학을 목표로 국제 중고등학교, 혹은 국제 초등학교에 진학을 시키는 경우도 있지만 지나치게 높은 학비와 검증되지 않은 외국인 교사들로 인해 사실상 바가지 요금을 내고 아이들을 교육시키고 있었습니다. 만일 국제 학교에서 영어권 동남아 국가 출신 교사와 미국 듣보잡 대학 졸업생 출신의 교사가 아이들을 가르치고 있고 SAT 시험 준비를 위해 주말에는 서울의 대치동 모텔에서 합숙하며 스파르타식 수업을 해야 한다는 것을 미리 알았더라면 과연 국제 학교에 아이들을 진학시킬 부모가 있을까 의문입니다.
Recently, while discussing my child’s education with family, I learned they were considering an international middle and high school in Gapyeong. Upon looking into it, I discovered it is a school run by the Unification Church Foundation. The Unification Church is known as South Korea’s largest cult, and even after the death of its founder, Reverend Moon, it continues to wield immense religious power through his sons and successors. I was aware of its enormous membership and the vast scale of its business operations, but this was the first time I learned it was involved in education. Of course, there is no reason to discriminate against a school run by the Unification Church Foundation compared to one run by a Christian or Buddhist foundation. I believe the passion and dedication of its teachers and students toward education would be outstanding compared to public schools. Particularly, with parents’ trust in crumbling public schools eroding and news of school violence or other instances of damaged educational authority, the demand for good schools is likely higher than ever. In that sense, international schools might offer parents a good alternative. Furthermore, each family will likely choose their child’s school and path based on their educational goals, which often center on admission to top-tier universities. Some families aim for admission to elite foreign universities, sending their children to international middle/high schools or even international elementary schools. However, due to excessively high tuition fees and unvetted foreign teachers, they were essentially paying exorbitant prices for their children’s education. If parents had known beforehand that their children would be taught by teachers from English-speaking Southeast Asian countries and graduates of obscure American universities, and that they’d have to attend Spartan-style weekend boot camps at motels in Seoul’s Daechi-dong district to prepare for the SAT, I doubt many would have sent their children to international schools.
저는 미국 LA에서 3년을 거주하다가 애플 본사가 위치해 있는 쿠퍼티노로 이주한 경험이 있습니다. 전에 애플 본사에서 오프라인 프로모션 기회를 얻게 되어 쿠퍼티노 메인 캠퍼스에서 미니 게임 이벤트를 열고 참가한 애플 직원 분들에게 아이튠스 기프트 카드를 경품으로 준 적이 있었습니다. 그 때 참여했던 한 직원분과 좋은 인연으로 이어져 나중에 쿠퍼티노에 이주를 한 후에 개인적으로도 부부끼리 만날 기회가 있었습니다. 이 부부는 미국에 이민 온 대만계 미국인 1.5세였는데 남편은 애플 본사의 핵심 부서의 팀장님이셨고 아내분이 쿠퍼티노의 공립 학교의 교사셨습니다. 그런데 몇 년간 학교에서 근무하다가 최근에 자신의 아이들을 학교에서 자퇴시키고 본인도 학교를 그만 두고 홈스쿨링을 하고 있다고 하여 놀랐던 기억이 있습니다. 아이들을 홈스쿨링하는 이유가 여러가지가 있었지만 매우 신실한 크리스천 가정이었던 이 부부는 자신들의 교육 핵심 가치와 미국의 공립 학교의 핵심 가치와 일치하지 않다는 것이 가장 큰 이유였습니다. 그 때는 미국 생활을 한지 얼마 안되었을 때이기도 하고 저희 아이들이 공립 학교에 입학하기 전이라서 그 말이 무슨 뜻인지 잘 이해가 되지 않았습니다. 그 후 캘리포니아 쿠퍼티노 학군이 미국에서도 가장 좋은 학군이면서 가장 교육열이 높은 지역이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그리고 공립 학교에 아이들을 입학시키면서 점차 미국 학교 시스템과 교사의 수준 그리고 학교에서 가르치는 핵심 가치들이 어떤 것인지 알게 되었습니다. 그러나 초등학교에서 혼성 화장실을 만든다던가 동성 결혼식에 참관하는 체험 학습이 있다는 것을 알게 되면서 불편했고 점차 크리스찬 가정에서 아이들에게 가르치는 핵심 가치들과 미국의 공교육에서 가르치는 것들이 정면으로 충돌한다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 그리고 공립 학교 교사셨던 그 분이 왜 학교를 그만두고 자기 아이들을 홈스쿨링을 할 수 밖에 없었는지 이해가 되었고 교육의 핵심 가치를 지키기 위해 자신의 기득권을 포기했던 용기가 대단해 보였습니다. 물론 남편이 애플이라는 글로벌 테크기업에 다니는 안정적인 직책이 있었지만 그 가정은 아빠의 해외 출장에 맞춰 아이들과 함께 여행을 가고 온라인으로 수업을 하면서 직접 가르칠 수 없는 과목은 다른 홈스쿨링 교사들의 도움을 받으면서 아이들 각자 맞춤으로 커리큘럼을 세우고 공부를 하고 있었습니다.
I lived in Los Angeles for three years before moving to Cupertino, where Apple’s headquarters is located. I once had the opportunity to work on an offline promotion at Apple headquarters, where we organized a mini-game event at the main campus in Cupertino and gave away iTunes gift cards to Apple employees who participated. They had a number of reasons for homeschooling their children, but the main one was that they were a very devout Christian family and their core values in education didn’t align with the core value of public schools in the U.S. At the time, we had only been in the U.S. for a short time and my children hadn’t started public school yet, so I didn’t really understand what they meant. Later, as we discovered that the Cupertino, California school district was one of the best districts in the country and one of the most highly educated districts in the country. Also as we enrolled our children in public school, we gradually became aware of the American school system and the quality of the teachers. However, the core values that were being taught in the schools were uncomfortable when we learned that there were experiential learning experiences in elementary schools, like building mixed-sex bathrooms and attending same-sex weddings, and we gradually realized that the core values that we were teaching our children in our Christian home were in direct conflict with what was being taught in American public education. I understood why this former public school teacher had to quit her job and homeschool her children, and I admired her courage in giving up her vested interests to uphold the core values of education. Sure, her husband had a stable job at Apple, a global tech company, but they were traveling with the kids to accommodate his overseas business trips, taking classes online, and customizing their own curriculum with the help of other homeschoolers for subjects they couldn’t teach themselves.
그 이후 한국으로 돌아와 느낀 것은 어릴 때부터 한국 학생들밖에 없는 영어 유치원이나 국제 학교에 비싼 수업료를 내면서 아이들에게 영어로 교육을 시키고 주말마다 고액 SAT 전문 학원이 있는 서울 강남 지역에 아이들을 보내면서 사교육비를 두 배로 들인 결과가 과연 무엇일까 하는 것이었습니다. 그리고 이런 이해할 수 없는 교육의 핵심 가치와 목표를 가지고 이상한 교육 과정을 거친 아이들은 과연 어떤 사람들로 성장하게 될까 하고 생각해 봤습니다. 회사에서 승진하기 위해 동료와 경쟁하며 내부 정치를 하는 직장인과 옆 가게와 협력할 줄 모르고 어떻게든 자기만 살면 그만이라고 생각하는 자영업자 그리고 돈을 벌기 위해서는 수단과 방법을 가리지 않는 증권 시장의 작전 세력이 떠올랐습니다. 그래서 저는 이제라도 교육의 핵심 가치를 올바른 기독교적 가치관을 배우면서 그런 가치관을 갖고 있는 친구들과 교제하고 성장하는데 두기로 했습니다. 그리고 존리 대표님이 부자되기 습관 책에서 언급한 대로 사교육비를 줄여서 아이들 명의로 투자를 하고 투자한 기업에 대한 뉴스를 공유하며 함께 주식 공부를 시작했습니다. 또한 정해진 모범 답안을 외우는 것이 아니라 유대인 하브루타 교육 방식으로 등교길에 아이들과 서로의 생각을 나누며 챗GPT에게 창의적인 질문을 하는 방법을 저희 아이들부터 시작했습니다. AI 시대에 더욱 인간다운 인간으로 키우고 혼란스러운 가치관 속에서 진리에 기반을 둔 본질적인 가치관을 배우고 실천할 수 있는 글로벌 리더를 키우기 위해 교육해야 한다고 다짐하고 오늘도 새벽에 일어나 오디오북을 읽고 블로그를 남깁니다.

Therefore, I have decided to focus on the core value of education: learning sound Christian values and growing alongside friends who share those values. As CEO John Lee mentioned in his book ‘John Lee’ s habit of getting rich’, I reduced private education expenses and started investing in the children’s names. We began studying stocks together by sharing news about the companies we invested in. Furthermore, instead of memorizing predetermined model answers, we’ve started with our own children, using the Jewish Havruta educational method. On the way to school, we share our thoughts with each other and practice asking ChatGPT creative questions. Resolved to educate them to become more human in the AI era and to nurture global leaders who can learn and practice essential values grounded in truth amidst confusing values, I rise at dawn again today to read audiobooks and write this blog.
