회사 10주년 창립 행사에 참석 차 중국 상하이에 출장을 다녀왔습니다. 분기 사업 보고 미팅에 참석하여 토니 빈 자오 창업자도 처음으로 만나고 미국지사에서 출장 온 회사의 리더쉽 팀을 만날 수 있었습니다. 중국인 대표와 인도인 지사장과 미국인 기술 총괄 그리고 최근에 입사한 스페인어를 유창하게 하는 비서 실장까지 다양한 문화와 언어의 최고 인재들 가운데 제가 한국인 지사장으로 있다는 것이 아직도 놀랍습니다.
I traveled to Shanghai, China, to attend the company’s 10th anniversary celebration, where I attended a quarterly business debriefing meeting, met our founder Tony Bin Zhao for the first time, and met the company’s leadership team traveling from the U.S. I’m still amazed that I’m the Korean country manager among top talent from different cultures and languages, including a Chinese and Indian president, an American head of technology, and a recently hired Spanish-speaking secretary.
상하이 우자오창 하얏트 리젠시 호텔에 묵으면서 매일 새벽에 일어나 실내 수영장에서 수영을 한 뒤 걸어서 사무실에서 약 15분 정도 걸려서 출근을 했습니다. 도착하면 아침 일찍 출근하는 직원들을 위해 준비된 중국 찐빵과 맥카페 패스트푸드 그리고 삶은 달걀이 준비되어 있었습니다. 한국에서 항상 화상 회의로만 만나던 직원들을 직접 만나니 인터넷의 가상 인물이 살아난 것 같은 느낌도 들고 작년에 만났던 직원들을 다시 보니 무척이나 반가웠습니다. 무엇보다 2년 전 미국에서 만났던 토니 왕 공동 대표와 오랜만에 직접 만나니 감회가 새롭고 마치 오래된 친구를 다시 만난 것 같았습니다. 토니와 같은 호텔에서 머물고 있었기 때문에 아침 식사를 같이 하자는 그의 메세지는 자연스럽긴 했지만 분명히 저에게 할 얘기가 있을 것이라는 저의 직감은 틀리지 않았습니다. 인도네시아 시장이 좀저럼 열리지 않는다고 하며 한국 지사에게 맡겨보겠다고 하여 그러지 않아도 같은 고민을 하고 있다고 얘기했습니다. 결국 출장 기간 중 한번 더 저녁 식사를 하면서 오스트레일리아 지역에 대한 사업 개발까지 맡게 되었습니다. 농담으로 사업부 실장에게 공동 대표님과 아침 식사와 저녁 식사를 했더니 인도네시아와 오스트레일리아가 추가되었으니 다음에 식사를 하자고 하면 어느 국가가 떨어질 지 모르겠다고 했습니다.
While staying at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Wujiaochang, Shanghai, I woke up every day at dawn, swam in the indoor pool, and then walked to the office, which took about 15 minutes. Upon arrival, there were Chinese steamed buns, McCafe fast food, and boiled eggs ready for the early risers. It felt like a virtual person on the internet came to life to meet my colleagues in person after always meeting them via video conference in Korea, and it was great to see some of the people I met last year. Most of all, meeting Co-President Tony Wang, whom I had met in the US two years ago, was a renewed sense of excitement and felt like meeting an old friend. I was staying at the same hotel as Tony, so his message to join me for breakfast was spontaneous, but I had a hunch that he had something to tell me. He told me that the Indonesian market was slow to open up and that he would leave it to his Korean counterpart, so I told him that I was having the same problem. We ended up having dinner one more time during the trip and I ended up taking on business development for the Australian region. I jokingly told the business unit head that since I had breakfast and dinner with the co-president, Indonesia and Australia had been added to the list, so I didn’t know which country would be dropped the next time I asked him to dine with me.
한편 중국 상하이에 실질적인 본사를 두고 미국 나스닥에 ADR (American Depository Reserve) 형태로 상장을 한 글로벌테크 회사에서 근무하면서 전세계 최고의 인재들과 교류하면서 느끼는 바가 많았습니다. 창업자 역시 1세대 실리콘밸리 개발자 출신으로 10년 전에 개러지 창업을 통해 전세계 700명이 넘는 기업으로 성장시킨 역사를 자축하는 10주년 창립 기념 행사를 참관하면서 이런 기업 문화를 만들어 가는 구성원들이 참 대단해 보였습니다. 그에 반해 아직도 수출과 내수 기업의 프레임을 가지고 대기업과 중소기업이라는 과거의 패러다임 속에서 우물 안 개구리처럼 살아가는 대한민국의 청년 세대가 안타까웠습니다. 마치 독수리 새끼에게 눈을 가리고 모이를 먹게 하여 자신이 닭장 안의 병아리인 줄 착각하고 살아가게 하는 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다. 공립 학교와 사설 학원에서 과거의 지식만을 가르치는 일부 선생님과 눈앞의 목표인 대학 입시가 꿈의 전부인 학생들에게 글로벌 시대의 패러다임이 바뀌었다는 것을 알리고 싶었습니다. 대한민국의 고등학생은 수학 점수를 올리기 위해 선행 학습을 하고 있을 때 누군가는 스타트업 창업을 위해 코딩을 배우고, 대한민국 대학생은 취업을 위해 스펙을 쌓고 있을 때 누군가는 스타트업 창업을 통해 세상의 문제를 해결하려고 노력하고 있기 때문입니다. 대한민국의 청년들이 이제는 우물 밖에 있는 수많은 기회를 잡을 수 있도록 더욱 격려해 주고 우리 다음 세대의 미래를 위해서 오늘도 블로그를 남깁니다.
Meanwhile, working for a global tech company with its physical headquarters in Shanghai, China, and listed as an American Depository Reserve (ADR) on the NASDAQ, I’ve gotten to interact with some of the best minds in the world. The founder is also a first-generation Silicon Valley developer, and as I attended the 10th anniversary event celebrating the company’s history of growing from a garage startup 10 years ago to over 700 employees worldwide, I was impressed with the people who are building such a corporate culture. On the other hand, I felt sorry for the younger generation in Korea who are still living like frogs in a well in the old paradigm of export and domestic companies. I thought it was like blindfolding an eagle chick and letting it feed on birds of prey, making it think it was a chick in a chicken coop. I wanted to let them know that the paradigm has changed in the global era, that some teachers in public schools and private academies are still teaching them the knowledge of the past, and that their only dream is to get into college. This is because when a high school student in Korea is doing advanced studies to improve their math scores, someone is learning to code to create a startup, and when a college student in Korea is building their resume to get a job, someone is trying to solve the world’s problems by creating a startup. I blog today to further encourage the youth of Korea to seize the many opportunities that are now outside the well, and for the future of our next generation.
