코로나 기간동안 유튜브 라이브로 폭발적으로 부흥한 캄(KAM) 선교회라는 곳이 있습니다. 실시간 예배를 위주로 역삼동 상가 지하에서 시작한 기도 모임에서 동시 접속자 10,000명이 넘는 대한민국 최대의 온라인 기도회로 성장한 선교 단체입니다. 국제 정세와 세계 경제의 흐름을 선교사적인 관점으로 풀어나가는 것이 신선했고 통일 한국을 꿈꾸는 다음 세대들의 심장을 뛰게 하는 메세지를 전하고 있었습니다. 특히 대한민국의 지정학적인 위기가 고조되면서 전세계 열강들의 절서가 재편되고 있는 가운데 한반도의 통일 시나리오가 앞으로 어떻게 흘러갈 것인가에 대한 예언적인 말씀은 매우 통찰력이 있는 내용이었습니다. 그의 설교는 마치 탄산 음료처럼 시원했고 취업난과 저출산으로 우울해 하는 세대에게 희망을 주는 내용이 많았습니다.
There is an organization called KAM Mission that has exploded on YouTube Live during the pandemic. This missionary organization has grown from a prayer meeting in the basement of a Yeoksam-dong shopping mall to the largest online prayer group in Korea with over 10,000 concurrent users. It was refreshing to see a missionary perspective on international affairs and the global economy, and the message was one that tugged at the heartstrings of the next generation who dream of a unified Korea. His prophetic words on how the scenario of unification of the Korean peninsula would play out were very insightful, especially as the geopolitical crisis in Korea is escalating and reshaping the balance of power in the world. His sermons were as refreshing as a soda and offered hope to a generation depressed by joblessness and a declining birthrate.
또한 라이트하우스 기도회에서 여러 유명 기독교 강사들도 초대하여 채널의 신뢰도도 더욱 커져 갔습니다. 그리고 선교 단체의 대표인 데이비드차 목사는 자신의 강의 내용을 모아서 두잇 (Do It)이라는 책을 출간하여 베스트셀러 작가가 되기도 했습니다. 그래서 과거 음모론을 바탕으로 한 말씀과 표절한 책, ‘마지막 싸인’이라는 책이 절판된 이력이 있었지만 신학교 졸업과 더크로스처치의 박호종 목사님에게 안수를 받고 목사가 되어 저도 안심하고 그의 말씀과 매주 온라인 기도회를 시청하며 통일 한국과 세계 선교에 대한 소망을 가졌던 것입니다.
The channel’s credibility was further enhanced by inviting a number of well-known Christian lecturers to speak at the Lighthouse Prayer Meetings, and the head of the missionary organization, Rev. David Cha, became a best-selling author by compiling his lectures into a book called Do It. So, despite his past history of conspiracy theories and plagiarized books, including The Last Sign, which went out of print, I felt safe watching his sermons and weekly online prayer meetings, and had hope for a unified Korea and world missions.
그러나 이스라엘의 회복을 대한민국과 연결시키면서 디아스포라 유대인들을 이스라엘로 돌려보내기 위해 전세기를 대여했다는 것을 알았을 때 한 번쯤 의심을 했어야 했습니다. 이른바 알리야 사역으로 알려진 전세계 디아스포라 유대인을 이스라엘로 귀환시키는 일에 왜 한국의 기독교인들이 재정적인 후원을 해야하는지 의아했습니다. 그리고 이스라엘로 귀환되는 유대인들은 유대교로 개종되는데 유대교는 예수님을 믿지 않고 기독교인들을 박해한다는 점에서 알리야 사역에 문제가 있다는 지적을 했어야 했습니다. 또한 더크로스처치의 박호종 목사님은 과거 신사도 운동의 리더였던 분이라는 것을 알게 되면서 궁금증이 풀렸습니다. 그의 현 시세를 읽는 관점과 대한민국의 통일에 대한 비전 그리고 한국의 기독교인들에게 주는 메세지는 나름 설득력이 있었지만 문제는 영적으로 사람들을 미혹할 수 있는 메세지가 많았다는 점입니다. 지나치게 신앙적 열성을 추구하며 교회 중심의 삶이나 은사를 강조하며 성도를 가스라이팅 하여 결국 영혼이 피폐해지게 하는 무서운 신사도 운동은 풀러신학교의 찰스 피터 와그너 등 근본주의 개신교에서 시작한 부흥 운동이라는 것도 알게 되었습니다.
But I should have been suspicious when I learned that a chartered plane had been chartered to bring Jews from the diaspora back to Israel, linking Israel’s restoration to South Korea. I should have wondered why South Korean Christians would financially support an organization that brings Jews from the diaspora around the world back to Israel, known as the Aliyah Ministry. And I should have pointed out that aliyah is problematic because the Jews being returned to Israel are converted to Judaism, which does not believe in Jesus and persecutes Christians. My questions were answered when I learned that Pastor Park Ho Jong of The Cross Church was a former leader of the Shinto movement. His perspective on current events, his vision for the reunification of Korea, and his message to Christians in Korea were compelling, but the problem is that many of his messages can be spiritually deceptive. I also learned that the dreaded Shinto movement, which emphasizes a church-centered life and gifts with excessive religious fervor, is a revivalist movement started by fundamentalist Protestants such as Charles Peter Wagner of Fuller Theological Seminary.
그리고 이 모든 것이 갑작스런 유튜브 영상으로 뒤집히면서 데이비드차 선교사가 아닌 인간 차형규의 불륜과 공금횡령의 사실이 폭로되었습니다. 주말에 회원들에게 문자 발송으로 입장문을 공개하고 자신의 잘못을 일부 시인했지만 본인도 다른 사기꾼으로부터 피해를 봤다고 주장하며 억울함을 호소하는 그의 실시간 방송은 많은 사람들을 더욱 황당하게 했습니다. 선교사를 자칭하는 폴리(Paul Lee)라는 국제 사기꾼은 그의 오래된 약점을 이용하여 회원들의 헌금으로 하와이의 저택을 구매하게 하는 등 모두 다 경악할 수 밖에 없는 추악한 일들을 해 온 것입니다.
And all of this was suddenly turned upside down by a single YouTube video that exposed the affair and embezzlement of David Cha, the man, not the missionary. His live broadcast over the weekend, in which he released a text message to members and admitted some of his wrongdoings, but also claimed to have been victimized by another scammer, left many people even more appalled: an international scammer named Paul Lee, who claimed to be a missionary, had been using his old weakness to do some ugly things that made us all cringe, including using members’ donations to buy a mansion in Hawaii.
누가 더 악한 사람인지는 서로 법적 공방을 통해서 밝혀지겠지만 차형규 씨는 많은 순진한 기독교인들에게 큰 실망과 재정적인 손해, 그리고 한국 교회의 신뢰도를 떨어뜨린 사람이 되었습니다. 저도 지난 1년 간 유튜브 채널을 통해 그의 설교와 초빙 강사들의 강의를 즐겨 들으면서 몰랐던 새로운 사실을 배웠지만 그 내용들을 다시 성경에 비추어 검증하는 과정에는 소홀했다는 점을 반성했습니다. 마치 사도행전에 등장하는 베뢰아 사람들처럼 말씀을 받고 이것이 그러한가하여 상고하는 습관을 가져야겠다고 다짐하며 항상 분별하도록 영적으로 깨어 있어야겠다고 묵상했습니다. 그리고 저의 영혼에 필요한 것은 톡쏘는 탄산음료가 아니라 깨끗한 생수와 같은 말씀이 매일 필요하다고 깨닫고 오늘도 새벽에 일어나 블로그를 남깁니다.
Who is the more evil person will be revealed in their legal battles, but Mr. Cha has caused many unsuspecting Christians great disappointment, financial loss, and damage to the credibility of the Korean church. I reflected that over the past year, I have enjoyed listening to his sermons and guest lectures on his YouTube channel, learning new things I didn’t know, but neglecting to check them against the Bible. Like the Bereans in the book of Acts, I vowed to make it a habit to receive the Word and ask whether it is so and so, and to always be spiritually alert to discern. And I realized that what my soul needs is not a tangy soda, but a daily dose of the Word, like clean living water, which is why I still get up at dawn to blog today.
