At the Republican National Convention in Butler, Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump had a split-second moment of absolute clarity when an assassin’s bullet grazed his ear. The bullet, which would have gone straight through his head, deflected off his right ear as he turned his head for a split-second, tragically killing a supporter behind him and leaving two others in critical condition. The shot was broadcast live around the world as Trump reflexively ducked and his bodyguards surrounded him to protect him. For a few seconds, everyone was stunned and there were screams from the direction of the shot, but then Trump threw his hands up in the air and shouted “Fight” as his bodyguards surrounded him and the crowd cheered and chanted “USA.” It was like something out of a movie.
The news of the assassination attempt was front-page news around the world, and I followed the story closely. On the final day of the Republican National Convention, after Trump’s family members and many other speakers, including celebrity anchor Tucker Carlson, wrestler Hulk Hogan, and Reverend Franklin Graham, the son of Billy Graham, took the podium to deliver his final speech. He continued his moving speech by saying that he was only able to stand here by the grace of God, and held a moment of silence for Corey, a former firefighter who was sacrificed on his behalf. I was traveling to Seoul to listen to this speech live, and while the content of the speech was great, I felt like Trump was not the same person I knew in the past. He was really humble, genuinely thankful, and showed the traits of a true leader who sacrifices for America. His platform and vision were very specific, and he did a great job of explaining them in words that the public could understand. He criticized the family values, immigration policies, and energy policies that have been destroyed under the Democrats and outlined how he would fix these issues if he were to become president.
While listening to the speech, I realized that many of the political issues in the United States are similar to those in Korea. Adopting anti-discrimination laws as a party line, destroying family values defined by the Bible and the Constitution, and switching to green energy policies that actually destroy the environment, putting Korea into an energy crisis in the age of AI, were similar to the situation in the United States. Watching former President Trump’s speech and the many ordinary American citizens who supported him, I vaguely realized what the American dream is, which is a political system built on Christian values and guaranteed human rights and freedoms by the Constitution, and the process of building such a country. I also recalled that Korea’s constitution and political system were also built by benchmarking the United States, and I had the hope that many people in Korea would fulfill the Korean dream. Realizing that each day is a gift from God, as former President Trump said, I woke up at dawn today and started strongly by organizing my blog.
