The learning method I used to get my older child to write a blog while preparing for university admissions interviews proved highly effective. After reading newspaper editorials or books, I had them write down their thoughts, choosing to agree, disagree, or offer a third perspective. I explained that this training gradually builds the ability to organize one’s thoughts and engage in logical conversation, which is the best way to prepare for university interviews. Crucially, I told them that writing helps you realize what you know and what you don’t know. My eldest later mentioned that a professor at Handong University said exactly the same thing during a class.
While this effort seems simple, it’s actually very difficult for today’s generation, accustomed to rapid screen-scrolling. Slowly reading and organizing one’s thoughts requires patience and concentration. While one can watch 10-second short-form videos for hours, enduring the few minutes it takes to read a single page of a newspaper editorial is difficult. Writing a page of one’s own takes tens of minutes to hours, making it a painful task. However, the author states that after going through this process once or twice, one can become a creator who builds the foundation and structure of thought through writing, then creates multiple layers within it to decorate beautifully.
This concept was elaborated in detail in Takashi Saito’s book, The Power of Writing. I fully agreed with the author’s view that this process cultivates the ability to confidently present one’s thoughts in front of others through structured presentations, the endurance to think deeply about a single topic and develop writing with one’s own logic, and the capacity to reconstruct external events using one’s own thoughts and experiences as material, thereby shaping one’s self. I thought that if we cultivate the power of thinking through such writing while also studying the Bible, God’s Word, spiritual abilities could develop as well. I meditated on how the Bible, which not only conveys knowledge and moves readers but also saves their souls, truly possesses an amazing divine power. So today too, I woke up at 4:30 AM, began my day with prayer, and started the day energetically.
