Some analysts have suggested that hazardous materials comparable to those in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster could flow through river systems and affect the West Coast region; videos shared by citizens using radiation detection equipment on-site to warn of such risks have also circulated. However, major mainstream media outlets have failed to cover this issue in depth, and the vast majority of politicians—regardless of party affiliation—have not raised their voices to demand strong protests against the North Korean authorities or a comprehensive government-led investigation into the situation.
This stands in stark contrast to the overreaction seen in the past during the release of treated water from Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant, when—despite the scientific data indicating minimal risk—opposition politicians staged mass protest visits and allocated massive amounts of the national budget to conduct comprehensive inspections of seafood nationwide. The fact that the political landscape remains strangely quiet—even as warnings emerge, as some analysts suggest, that the potential risk from this spill in the border region could be dozens of times greater than that of the Fukushima treated water—raises serious questions. Although this security threat is tantamount to an asymmetric provocation that endangers the right to life of our own citizens, amid the media’s silence and the administrative authorities’ passive response, only vigilant citizens are voicing deep concern. The voices of prominent cultural and artistic figures—who, during the Fukushima crisis, likened the natural cycle to hell to stoke public fear—are nowhere to be found this time.
Witnessing the public’s indifference even in the face of a national security crisis and a threat to the right to life, I cannot help but feel a sense of sadness, wondering if this goes beyond mere complacency toward safety—is it not a state of sociopsychological paralysis, characterized by an inability to empathize with others’ crises and a refusal to confront structural contradictions? Perhaps the majority is escaping into social media on their smartphone screens or short-term consumerism, driven by an individualistic attitude that says, “Since there’s no immediate, visible impact on my daily life, it’s okay to stand by,” or by a sense of helplessness that there’s nothing an individual can do in the face of a massive system. Looking back, this social silence is likely the result of decades of accumulated influence from mass-market films that glorify violent organizations as groups of honor; cultural content that portrays North Korea’s military as romantic figures, thereby blurring perceptions of national security; and biased history education and cultural agitators who have adapted the complex military upheavals of modern history into fragmented narratives, thereby undermining their legitimate historical legitimacy.
However, the deeper the darkness, the more clearly the light of truth shines through. As author Lee Ji-sung—who has been at the forefront of efforts to rescue North Korean defectors through his book *10,000 Kilometers*—has exposed, the harrowing reality of human trafficking and child rights abuses perpetrated within North Korea has served as a massive wake-up call for the public. Furthermore, as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. revealed in his book *The Vaccine Betrayal*, the potential for structural side effects of the mRNA vaccines introduced during the global pandemic and the mechanisms of early containment using existing treatments are being reexamined. The theory of a leak from a global research laboratory regarding the origin of the pandemic is also solidifying as the prevailing view in the international security community. In this way, the spontaneous, silent voices of citizens—opposing legislation and policies that aim to establish a communist-style control system and seeking to directly confront the systemic vulnerabilities and debates over legitimacy revealed during the recent election—are gradually spreading into a massive resonance.
Amid these times, I, too, resolutely pledge to become a voice crying out in the wilderness—standing firm against injustice and confronting distortions in the public sphere, just as the former CEO of “Kukdae Tteokbokki” once demonstrated courage. I am convinced that the noble spirits of the countless missionaries of faith who shed their precious blood for the evangelization and modernization of the Republic of Korea, as well as the veterans who rushed into the crossfire of the Korean War to defend liberal democracy, are cheering for today’s Republic of Korea from heaven. Therefore, in the role life has given me, I will never cease to shoot arrows with all my skill or to write the truth.
Coincidentally, the Trump administration in the United States is now fully launching official judicial verification and a special counsel investigation into the structural election irregularities raised during the past presidential election, and Meanwhile, global security experts, including former Ambassador Morse Tan, are emphasizing the spirit of the ROK-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty and calling for international cooperation to address cyberattacks that threatened electoral governance. This is a clear signal that a “Second Incheon Landing Operation” to defend liberal democracy has begun. Just like the fireworks that light up the night sky on the U.S. Independence Day, this marks the prelude to a great hope for the restoration of South Korea’s sovereignty.
