When U.S. Vice President JD Vance visited Europe, he warned that European Christian values were disappearing, citing an incident in Britain. This incident involved a person opposed to abortion being prosecuted simply for praying silently near an abortion clinic. A control system where mere thoughts could violate the law was, in a word, communism, and it negated the values upon which a liberal democracy was founded. Moreover, major European cities have long been taken over by Muslim immigrants. They have effectively created autonomous zones governed by Sharia law, making it difficult to find the European cities we learned about in history books or museums. News that medieval churches in Europe have been converted into nightclubs is no longer a novel story.
After 25 years, a German international school classmate visited Songdo. We’d kept in touch through letters, emails, and video calls over the years, but this was our first meeting since I visited Germany in 2000 during a business trip to the headquarters of a Scottish game company while I was a university student. He stayed at our home in Songdo, Incheon, and we spent time together. Our itinerary included trips to Seoul and Busan. During our visit to Seoul, he even had an episode where he lost his passport but managed to find it again before safely returning to Germany. Talking with this friend, I learned about the immigration policies viewed by a left-leaning German centrist and his thoughts on Trump’s international trade policies, which were similar to those of left-leaning centrist citizens in South Korea. I also realized that this perspective was the result of over 20 years of working at a large German corporation, fostering a uniform way of thinking.
However, I thought of him as a friend who, like me in my childhood, had attended an international school abroad, experienced diverse cultures, and could embrace new ideas and values with an open mind. So I naturally shared my faith and God with him. Especially when I said that finding his lost passport was because my family and I had prayed for it, he agreed it seemed that way and expressed his gratitude. Through this meeting, I learned for the first time that his father had passed away unexpectedly in Indonesia when he was in elementary school. Hearing that his mother had also passed away a few years ago due to a chronic illness, I grieved with him. I also learned he had become a vegetarian for health reasons and had no desire for marriage or children. I prayed that he would meet God and that his life would be transformed.
I wanted to tell my friend that while Germany is an important place in Christian history as the birthplace of Martin Luther, who initiated the Reformation, and the country where Gutenberg printed the Bible using movable type, since joining the EU’s economic sphere, German culture and Christian values have faded significantly. However, since joining the EU’s economic sphere, Germany’s culture and Christian values have faded significantly. And now, hearing the news that Germany has degenerated into a country where minors can undergo gender reassignment surgery without informing their parents, I couldn’t help but pray for South Korea, fearing that such terrifying things will soon come upon us once the anti-discrimination law passes here too. So today, to awaken the powerless citizens who remain silent about the spiritual adultery of false pastors still advocating for the separation of religion and politics, or who have resolved to follow the prevailing trend within the false media world, I began my day with vigor, shouting out to the world through my blog—just as Pastor Bonhoeffer of Germany did when he fought against Hitler’s dictatorship.
