침례탕에 둘째 아들과 함께 들어가서 미리 녹화해둔 간증 영상을 보면서 저는 눈물을 참느라 힘들었습니다. 왜냐하면 아들의 간증은 “아버지가 몇 년전 직장을 잃었다”는 내용으로 시작하여 다시 새 직장을 구하는 과정에서 우리 가정을 지키시는 하나님을 알게 되었고 좀 더 하나님을 깊이 믿고 싶어졌다고 말했기 때문이었습니다. 뜻밖의 간증 내용에 놀라기도 하고 물에 완전히 잠겼다가 다시 올라오는 죽음에서 생명으로 옮겨지는 의식을 통해서 감동이 몰려왔습니다. 매우 짧은 시간이었지만 침례 전과 후는 하나님의 관점에서는 영원의 순간이었을 것 같습니다.
As I entered the baptismal pool with my second son and watched the pre-recorded testimony video, I struggled to hold back tears. My son’s testimony began with “My father lost his job several years ago,” and he shared how, during the process of finding new employment, he came to know God protecting our family and grew to desire a deeper faith in Him. I was surprised by the unexpected content of his testimony, and as I was completely submerged in the water and then rose again, the ritual of passing from death to life brought a wave of emotion. Though it was a very short time, from God’s perspective, the time before and after baptism must have felt like an eternity.
3년 전 큰 아들의 침례 때도 그랬지만 자녀가 침례를 받는 것이 제가 침례를 받았을 때보다 더 설레고 감동적이었습니다. 특히 아이들의 간증 영상을 볼 때는 그들의 신앙 고백을 통해 얼마나 하나님을 사랑하고 예수님의 삶을 따르고 싶어하는지 알 수 있어서 더욱 그 의미가 컸습니다. 부모의 잔소리에 못이겨 억지로 침례를 받는 것이 아니라 스스로의 맏음과 고백으로 결정한 것이기 때문에 마치 천국의 문이 열리고 물 속에 잠겼다가 다시 떠오를 때는 손에 천국의 열쇠를 들고 나타나는 것 같았습니다. 크리스천에게는 영적으로 다시 태어나는 의식인 침례식은 반드시 통과해야 하는 의식으로 예수님도 요단강에서 요한으로부터 침례를 받고 하늘에서 성령이 비둘기의 형상으로 내려왔다고 성경은 기록하고 있습니다. 이번 둘째 아들의 침례식도 하늘문이 열리고 성령님이 임재하셨던 시간이 되었기를 바라며 하나님께 감사를 드립니다.
Three years ago, when my eldest son was baptized, it was the same—seeing my children baptized was more thrilling and moving than when I was baptized myself. Especially when watching the children’s testimony videos, seeing their confession of faith revealed how much they love God and desire to follow Jesus’ life, making it all the more meaningful. It wasn’t baptism forced upon them by parental nagging, but a decision made through their own conviction and confession. So, when the waters parted and they emerged, it felt like the gates of heaven had opened, and they rose holding the keys to heaven in their hands. For Christians, baptism is a rite of spiritual rebirth, an essential ceremony to undergo. The Bible records that even Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River, and the Holy Spirit descended from heaven in the form of a dove. I give thanks to God, hoping that my second son’s baptism was also a time when the gates of heaven opened and the Holy Spirit was present.
