Freedom Devoured by Locusts

As a constitutional amendment aimed at distorting 80 years of South Korea’s modern history looms, many citizens are waking up to the reality. Even as authoritarian regimes around the world are losing ground and collapsing one by one, South Korea is moving in the exact opposite direction—toward the consolidation of an authoritarian system. Anti-state forces seem to sense that their time is running out. The rush to push through this constitutional amendment in time for the June 3 local elections is clear evidence of this. Many citizens have already seen through the intention not only to resume the effort to remove the word “freedom” from the Constitution—a move pursued by past administrations—but also to enshrine the May 18 Incident in the Constitution, thereby rewriting the nation’s roots as a popular uprising.

In addition to the testimony of former CIA agent Michael Lee, Jeon Han-gil, a former history instructor and current representative, has also recently spoken out to set the record straight regarding the true nature of the May 18th incident. Through various Christian leaders, I have come to understand that attempts to include the “spirit of May 18th” in the Constitution are ultimately intended to silence critical voices. Over the past year or so, as freedom has been crushed, religious persecution has continued, and innocent citizens have been sacrificed due to unverified vaccine side effects, the process has felt like witnessing the plagues of locusts and grasshoppers. They were slowly gnawing away at our freedom, but we took comfort in the words of the Book of Joel: “I will repay them for all this.” For the world may change and the mountains and hills may vanish, but God’s Word alone endures forever.

The nomination of Ambassador Michelle Park Steel, a Korean American, to the position of U.S. Ambassador to South Korea—a post that had been vacant for 18 months—was a sign that the time of restoration is near. Though the wicked are quick to shed blood, it seems God has already laid out a plan to save South Korea. After learning about Ambassador Steel through her past statements, I couldn’t help but be amazed. I felt she was like Sheshbazzar, who came as governor upon receiving King Cyrus’s decree to rebuild the ruined walls of Israel. Furthermore, my conviction deepened when I saw news that she had recently met with John Mills, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, who had visited Korea as part of an international election monitoring team.

I was taken aback when I saw the Assistant Secretary’s “Like” on the Bible verse I had posted, and I sensed intuitively that the full-scale rebuilding of the walls had now begun. In particular, the scale of the gatherings held every weekend, centered on the younger generation, is growing larger, and we are now at a point where all that is needed is for a leader to emerge who can guide the power of this crowd. I meditate on fulfilling my calling from my position, determined to awaken even one more Christian and help even one more startup founder succeed. Today, I began the day with vigor, having dreamed of joining 100 coaches in early morning prayer.

“I will restore to you the years that the locusts have eaten—the great locust, the young locust, the other locusts, and the swarm of locusts—my great army that I sent against you.” (Joel 2:25)
